This week's beer is my second feature from Moab Brewery, from the adventure city of Moab, Utah. It had been a couple years since we visited, and while we only had one night, we decided to explore some of the places outside the national parks. Naturally, we capped the evening off with dinner at the brew pub, where I finally got to try their Especial Golden Wheat Ale.
You probably know me best for my love of amber lagers, but a proper (whatever that means) golden ale ranks up there for me too. Despite having a tin tacker of this beer up on my wall for about the past four years, I somehow didn't even know it existed, but was more than happy to finally try it when we sat down at the brewery.
Enjoying an Especial inside Moab Brewery.
A filtered ale, it pours a crisp, clear golden-yellow color with a thin head. First sips bring on subtle hints of bread, grain, and finish with a mild sweetness. I know I've said it a lot in my other reviews, but it's yet another easy-drinking beer, perfect after a long, hot day of hiking. It's lighter than an amber, but heavy enough to pack the perfect amount of flavor. Like most Utah beers, they're capped at 5.0% ABV on draft, and Especial is no different. My only complaint is that they didn't have individual six packs of it for sale in the brewery, so we had to buy a mix pack, which, in hindsight, isn't a disappointment because we ended up with more beer.
Fisher Towers, just outside of Moab, Utah.
For the photo, the can of Especial was lucky enough to accompany us on our hike to Fisher Towers, tucked away near the small town of Castle Valley, about 45 minutes from Moab. The towers were jaw dropping, the hike a decent work, and a beer after our four mile trek would have been lovely, except it wasn't even noon yet--more to take home to Buffalo, I guess.
So, if you find yourself in Moab, definitely check out Moab Brewery and their awesome selection of beers, including the Especial. Also, it's a great place for dinner--I highly recommend the beer cheese soup, if, like me, you don't value your body and what you put into it. As for the Especial, I give it 8/10 sandstone towers. Cheers!
