Beer of the Week #7: Mile Wide Beer Co.'s Caterpillar's Mojo

I hadn't been through Kentucky since road tripping to Tennessee on a whim for the solar eclipse back in 2017. My only memory was stopping for beer, and coming to the horrible realization that we were in a dry county. In the bourbon capital of the world? Come on!

Fast forward to last week (October of 2021, for all of those reading this in the future... what?), where we were on our way to Nashville to watch our beloved Buffalo Bills take on the Tennessee Titans in Monday Night Football--don't worry who won the game, it's not important.

We decided to spend a night in Louisville, to experience Kentucky properly, and check out Mammoth Cave National Park the next day. Our time in Louisville was cut short, unfortunately: our hotel room had an... interesting smell to it, so my first instinct was to check under the mattress, where some bed bugs greeted me. Needless to say, some precious Louisville-time was lost negotiating a refund, and finding a hotel that didn't mention "bed bugs" in the reviews. Checked in to an insect-free inn, we decided to try and forget the memory of the first hotel by exploring the local beer scene: enter Mile Wide Beer Co.

Housed within an old grain silo, this place immediately piqued my interest, my native city of Buffalo being famous for it's grain silos as well. Grain silos are exactly what they sound like, but just in case you don't know, take a look at the picture below at the one that Mile Wide calls home.

Grainy. Silo-y.

Right, the beer: my love of amber ales is only matched by the perfect blonde ale, but this time, I decided to spice things up a bit by going for the passion fruit-infused Caterpillar's Mojo. This 5.0% tropical blonde pours a slightly hazy, golden color, with a decent frothy head. First taste is slightly bready--the way I prefer blonde ales, with a slight taste of honey, which is then taken over by the rich, passion fruit flavor. I don't mean that in a bad way, mind you: had I wanted a regular blonde ale, I would have ordered their Brabble Ale. No, this beer was perfect for a late, Louisville afternoon, where despite being October, it was 81 degrees out--don't worry, it plummeted into the 50's the next day.

So, next time you find yourself in Louisville, check the online reviews before booking a hotel (honestly, good advice no matter where you're staying), and then pop over to Mile Wide Beer Co. for what I would say is genuinely one of the best beer line ups I've had in a while. I give it 13/10 grain silos. Prost!
