Beer of the Week #10: Hamburg Brewing Company's Yule Shoot Your Rye Out

I grew up watching A Christmas Story--it's the definition of a Christmas classic. What other movie do they play for 24 hours straight on two different basic cable channels? To be fair, I know they did that with Christmas Vacation one year--a worthy adversary to the full day of A Christmas Story, but sadly, it didn't last: You serious, Clark?

Anyways, this festive beer by Hamburg Brewing Company has been around every holiday season for at least the past couple years now, and for some reason, I've always been afraid to try it--probably because rye is one of my least favorite types of bread, but this is a beer blog, not a bread blog (for now), so moving on.

Yule Shoot Your Rye Out.

I finally mustered the courage and ordered a pint of Yule Shoot Your Rye Out last week while at Hamburg's local taproom: a spiced, holiday ale at 6% ABV, it pours a deep, golden-copper color, with a frothy head--a good start. A first taste gives a wonderful, bready flavor, followed by subtle notes of ginger and spices--it's kind of like a gingerbread cookie in a glass, but with alcohol too, thank god. I'm not a huge fan of holiday ales, but this one, much to my surprise, really hits the spot. It sits a little heavy, which shouldn't be surprising at 6%, but I found myself going up for another; a perfect beer for the winter time, best enjoyed indoors with friends, preferably near a fireplace. Or, alone at your computer writing a mediocre-at-best beer blog, with three cats behind you... Anyways!--I give this one 8.5/10 official Red Ryder, carbine action, two-hundred shot range model air rifles.
